What does "Pre-Fall" mean?

Having not been in retail for long, I really didn't understand what "Pre-Fall" meant. I thought it was just a made-up season for the benefit of wholesalers.

However, as new pieces start to trickle in, I realize now that this in between season serves to get us excited for what's to come in the next few months.

While we may not be ready, yet, for cashmere a gorgeous coat, tunic, or suit can always come in handy.

Take a peak at "Pre-Fall" from Milly:

Dreams....

Allegra Hicks caftan now available at 50% off

For those of you who missed last night's lecture on "Your Child's Dreams" here is a recap...

Dr. Lennox discussed how important it is to encourage our children to tell us their dreams and to share our own dreams to open the dialog. He stresses that we will all miss out on a large part of our imaginative life, and miss the connection between what is "real" (physically present) and "real" (present in our imagination) if we don't examine our dreams.

Our children's dreams are also a window into their fears. Dr. Lennox feels that we should never tell our children, in response to being told a frightening dream, that "it was just a dream". We need to validate their fears and delve further into what the dream was and may have signified.

Night terrors require a watchful eye, on the part of a parent, but not too much involvement. Be present to reassure the child, and hold them if need be. But, these will pass. Some children will always have a more active dream life. Nightmares, as above, should be discussed and explored.

For more information, feel free to contact Dr. Lennox directly. Email eve@wicati.com for his information

Meet Briana Morrison

If you haven't had the pleasure of meeting Wicati's newest staff member, Briana Morrison, stop by on a Friday afternoon or Saturday. Her background as a designer and sylist have made her a phenomenal addition to our community. Here's a little more about Briana...
Briana was born in Tempe, Arizona to parents who are both in the medical industry. Despite their best efforts, with medical relief trips to South America and summer jobs in the family business, The Morrison Vein Institute, Briana could not be convinced to go into Medicine.
Instead, Briana attended Forham University in NYC and received a Business Administration degree. Later, she obtained a Fashion Degree at FIDM in Los Angeles. Her love of clothing, mixed with her genetic predisposition for entrepreneurship, landed her in wide ranging positions.
Whether it be merchandising for Ralph Lauren at Bloomingdales in New York, or designing her own label and producing fashion shows to display and sell her work, Briana loves clothes and will always work with and around them. This love has gotten her backstage work at Chanel fashion shows, design work with name brand lines, stylist work for private clients and companies, and her favorite new position at Wicati Boutique!
Briana has an excellent eye and can help you find just the right pieces for your style and body type. Come see for yourself!!

About Last Night...

For everyone who missed Roberta's talk on "Maintaining discipline and motivation when you work alone," here are the highlights:

1.Tips on how to stay disciplined

*Draw a line between personal and professional time. You need to "intentionally" manage your time -- What hours are work time and what hours are personal/family time. It's easy with the pervasiveness of technology in our lives to blur the distinction.
*Work from a plan. It's essential to always move towards a destination. This also requires that you establish a time frame within which to reach your goals. Keeping a destination in mind will help you to make decisions You can always change your plan, but you need to start with one.
*Structure your day with rules and stick to them. Decide where to work, especially if you work at home. Be sure that family members are aware of your rules and follow them. Daily, create written expectations of what you plan to accomplish.
*Take the path of least resistance. Don't make things more complicated than they need to be. This includes honoring your own rhythm – ie at what time of day do you work best? Don't work in the early morning if you are most efficient later in the day.
*Do daily maintenance. Avoid clutter in your work space. You will be more focused that way.
*Stay connected to your field. You will lose your confidence if you aren't up on the latest trends, research etc...
*Create a system of accountability. Work on deadlines. Have a weekly appointment with yourself to clarify what you wish to accomplish for the week. It may help to have an accountability buddy -- a colleague or friend; but not anyone who is too personally or financially invested in your business.

2. Tips on how to stay motivated:

*Have a support network. Don’t isolate yourself : collaborate. Collaboration both keeps you committed, and may bring new business opportunities.
*Schedule regular human contact. This may also double as networking time.
*Work towards short and long term goals every week. Instead of fighting fires, make progress a habit.
*Measure your progress objectively.
* Keep concrete reminders of your progress handy.
*Keep 2 lists available: 1. the business benefits of what you are pursuing and 2. the personal benefits of your endeavor.
* Have scheduled intermittent rewards. This may be particulary helpful if done after completing tasks that your really dislike.
* Consider hiring out; especially to cover parts of your work that you dislike.
*Have a 15 minute success. Pick something that has to be done, and that will take no longer than 15 minutes, and complete it. It will fuel you to accomplish other things.
* Know who your champions are and reach out to them when you need a boost. These people can instantnly change your mood and encourage you to continue.
*Plan to become unmotivated. Everyone will have those moments. Have an arsenal of tools available to pull you out.
*When you get off track, just climb back on -- without judgement!!!

We hope that this is helpful for everyone.

Also, new on the sale rack today : from 60-70% off of select styles by Walter, Cynthia Steffe, and Poleci

Introducing Guest Blogger Roberta Lachman Jacobs

Hi,
I'm Roberta Lachman Jacobs, Wicati's guest blogger du jour. I'm the founder of thinkBIG (http://www.thinkthinkbig.com/), a consulting and training company dedicated to helping women acquire the skills, strategies and confidence to succeed in business.

Many of my clients have small businesses and, while working on one's own can be an empowering and exhilerating pursuit, in this rough economy, staying motivated can present quite a challenge. So how do you maintain your enthusiasm when forces beyond your control make it harder to succeed?

*Keep your eyes on the destination. Having a strong vision of where you want your business to go is a great motivator. Stay connected to both your short and long-term goals and objectively measure your progress towards reaching them. Additionally, provide yourself with concrete reminders of all that you've achieved.

*Don't be an island. First, have a cadre of trusted advisors who can provide a reality check. In difficult financial times, it can be hard to figure out if it's something you're doing (or not doing) or just an unavoidable byproduct of a lousy economy. Let smart, trustworthy people give you some perspective. Second, reach out to your champions. Be clear about who you can count on to cheer you on and get in touch with them if you feel a funk coming on. Third, collaborate when possible. It's a great way to benefit from the energy of others.

*Reward yourself intermittently. Don't wait to achieve a goal to celebrate. Schedule rewards along the way, particularly those that recognize your efforts and follow-through on the toughest tasks.

*Have fun. As much as trying times require us to buckle down and take things seriously, all work and no play will make you not only dull, but pretty stressed-out. So give yourself permission to have fun and find a way to enjoy what you're doing, in the moment, as much as possible.

*Plan to become unmotivated. It happens to everyone, and if you simply accept that it's a normal part of the journey, you can save yourself from the self-critical talk that can lead to weeks of eating bon bons in your bathrobe. Over my decades in business, I have discovered the one response to getting off track that works every single time: just get back on.

I will be speaking at Wicati tonight, from 6:30pm to 9pm, in more detail about how to maintain discipline and motivation when you work alone. I hope to see you all there!
